SCHTINTER PRESENTS THE LIBERATED FILM CLUB AT CLOSE-UP CINEMA, LONDON,
A MONTH-LONG CURATION IN JULY 2016 closeupfilmcentre.com

WEEK 5 (FINAL WEEKEND):
BEYOND LOST & BEYOND LOVE
We are lost and yet not lost - liberated and yet not liberated - we are loved and yet not loved: a programme designed to produce a specific effect in the age of ultimate contradictions.

Friday 29 - TINY ARGONAUTS
With an introduction by TONY GRISONI

A deep reading of the ancient ‘heroes’ uncovers a fact lost to the history of cinema, except perhaps in this film: the adventures and achievements of our ‘heroes’ - Theseus for example - happened long before the age of consent (16 in the UK). And this from the director of one of the most acclaimed film series of all time (14 in Germany).

Saturday 30 - I CAN'T WAIT TO GET OFF WORK AND SEE MY BABY (AND TAKE HIM TO CLOSE-UP TO SEE AN OBSCURE YUGOSLAVIAN FILM)
With an introduction by DAMIEN SANVILLE

Your husband and your son leave you? Never wanted children anyway, and I don’t recognise the man walking away. So! Escape into the infinite potential of your dreams, fantasies and necessarily distorted memories. Probably the most absolutely completely unseen film in this programme.

Sunday 31 - THE TROUBLE WITH LOVING YOU IN A WORLD SO WEAK
With an introduction by SCHTINTER

First touch in first glance of first love: momma, the world today is less pale. Forbidden, lost, destined for annihilation, but we ran through the garden of earthly speculations, didn’t we, momma. A film dedicated to the most unfashionable sensation and action in 2016. To end with Love.

Also presenting fragments from MICE: a film work in progress by Schtinter, on the artist sometimes known as Brion Gysin, with Genesis P-Orridge and Iain Sinclair.

WEEK 4:
30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF JEAN GENET
“Fierce and pure, I was the cinema of a fairyland restored to life." Films on the shackles of the shopkeeper and the unassailable conscience of the thief.

Friday 22 - SLOVAK BUDDHA AND OUR LADY OF THE FLAUBERT
With an introduction by ADAM ROBERTS

Kicking off our celebration of Jean Genet with a film entirely unrelated to Jean Genet. Or to paraphrase Flaubert and a hundred Buddha’s before him: anything becomes connected depending on how deeply you look at it.
A stranger is allowed to live in the house of a man. The stranger believes he can predict crimes, and when one doesn’t happen: the universe is upset and everyone must pay.

Saturday 23 - QUERELLE DOWN THE CHIMNEY (AND UP THE SPOUT)
With an introduction by JOHN AKOMFRAH

His parting and his tea cup, and his hardware store in South America circa 1966 says something of Hackney and Hartlepool now. New dimensions to film cuts the senses.
Popular singer in Argentina tackles an impossibilist capitalism and his conditioning of love on screen. Genet might have liked this film… and TRIVIA! Apparently he never saw Fassbinder’s Querelle: no movie house was willing to host the chimney smoking Jean!

Sunday 24 - NICO’S END
With an introduction by SHAMA KHANNA

By the most important director of mid-20th century Greece, and friend of Genet whom we may presume he stole from often, and from whom Andy Warhol stole the name for that blonde, drug-addled German who confirmed the numero-uno next level-ness of The Velvet Underground.

WEEK 3:
VINCENT GALLO STOPPED AT CALAIS (FINAL DESTINATION: SOVIET RUSSIA)
Films extreme and films confused: deeper goes the mole.

Friday 15 - VINCENT GALLO STOPPED AT CALAIS
With an introduction by BEN RIVERS

Murnau’s Faust didn’t take to Bunuel’s Spain; is alive and well for the fall of the Berlin Wall as the world wide web goes live. And there goes Vincent! Sliding imperceptibly across nu-Europe... until Calais. "Have you seen my orchard, bb?"

Saturday 16 - STAGGERING TOWARDS THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF THE SOVIET REVOLUTION (RUSSIAN HELL DOUBLE-BILL)
With an introduction by GIDEON KOPPEL

A double-bill for those who thought Elem Klimov’s Come and See, and more recently, Laszlo Nemes’ Son of Saul, conveyed the full horror and the full madness of war. By a director criminally lost to the English-language speaking word, probably because his name doesn’t figure in predictive text. Cum n C.

Sunday 17 - SPANISH CIVIL WAR 1936 - 2016
With an introduction by GARETH EVANS

Documentary shorts by the inevitably uncredited inventor of stereo sound proper: a stroboscopic tour of corrupt Catholic architecture, and a documentary feature on the term and conditioning of that monumental wanker, General Franco. If only history was a hallucination! Wait...

*

WEEK 2:
EPICS OF ERGOT: MOLE DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE
It takes a real film made unreal to say... No-No-No (and I know now) A.K.A. Cinema exploring altered states of seeing, being, and opposing the status quo.

Friday 8 - PIRATE BUNUEL DESCENDS ON THE ISLAND DWELLERS OF GOOGLE MINUS (CLOSE-UK)
With an introduction by ANDREA LUKA ZIMMERMAN

Google doesn’t make mistakes unless confronted by Liberated Film. With cinematography by Jose Gaspar, or Gasparilla, the last Spanish pirate, whose on-ship doctor slides sloshed into frame at the butt end of the 1960s. Think Murnau’s Faust on holiday in Bunuel’s Spain with an Argentinian concubine, a giant bouncy ball, and a passion for breaking reality. Lost? Exactly! Take a chance like Faust, like the doctor…

Saturday 9 - COMMUNIST POLAND VS. CAPITALIST BRITAIN
With an introduction by WILLIAM FOWLER

In Communist Poland as in Capitalist Britain: climb the ladder, lose your soul. But the journey was worth it, right? Cinematography by the pre-eminent Polish oscar-winning filmmaker, who accepted his trophy in Reebok sneakers and took them off to fight Academy security.

Sunday 10 - DESERT KAZAKHSTAN: A LOUCHE HALLUCINATION (I CALLED HER SAND I CALLED HER)
With an introduction by BEN RIVERS

You can only understand so much of the universe: push too hard in the moment and you’ll be stuck there. An undisputed masterpiece, and one of so few films exploring the full scope of Kazakhstan’s unmapped territories - in geographical and psychological terms. Could be Mars, dammit. Could be me and could be you. Could be sand.

FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF CLOSE-UP AND THE LIBERATED FILM CLUB LAUNCH
A weekend exploring what the rest of the month won't be.

Friday 1 - THE FACE ON THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR (APPROPRIATE EVERYTHING: A DOUBLE-BILL)

Misleading preview of the month to come introduced by special guest, artist and filmmaker Shezad Dawood, and series curator, Schtinter.

1: “If a bush can say: I am the Truth, so can a man.” An experiment in disappearance and smear: Mordant Music’s birthday present to Iain Sinclair. Where is Ramon Miguel?
2: “The past remains present to the future . . . the future is already present to the past.” If Jack Nicholson’s great undoing at The Overlook Hotel had been recorded on LSD in 3D by HAL 9000 of Space Odyssey fame.

Saturday 2 - ALL-NIGHT LAUNCH PARTY AND SHORT FILM PROGRAMME
When I am open I am the party - when I am closed I am not the party.

Including a Brexit double-bill with work by Louis Benassi and Sophie Michael.

Sunday 3 - MUSEUM OF LONELINESS AND THE CARIBBEAN MYSTERY

Director and writer Chris Petit presents an evening of his re-forgotten film work.

The director’s diverse and enigmatic career is explored in this programme, and summarised – in part – as: Radio On as YouTube virus starring Donald Pleasence and Paula Yates.
Petit’s film work includes Radio On, Content, and (with Iain Sinclair) The Cardinal & The Corpse, The Falconer and Asylum. His latest novel, Butchers of Berlin, is published by Simon & Schuster, whilst The Psalm Killer has recently been republished a Picador Modern Classic.

Signed copies of Petit’s recent purge.xxx releases: in conversation with the notorious British crime writer, Derek Raymond, and in collaboration with Mordant Music, will be available at the event.
